you’re fired

April 2023

How hard is it to get sacked? A few weeks ago I went to watch my football team, the greatest team that ever played, Aston Villa FC. They were up against Leicester City, playing in the Premier League at the King Power Stadium.

Now, I’m pretty biased, I’ve been a Villa fan since I could walk and talk, but I thought they played a cracking game.

They held the ball for the majority, made more passes, with more accuracy – and of course scored more goals, securing them a 2:1 win.

But that wasn’t all. They played a clean game too. No yellow cards. No red cards. Can’t quite say the same for their opponents! But that’s not my point…

My point is they lost – and only a few days before this Brendan Rodgers, the team’s manager at Leicester City lost his job too. But he’s not alone. Football managers have been getting fired all over the place! In fact, at the time he was the 13th Premier League manager to get sacked this season – that’s a record-breaking amount.

And it kinda got me thinking… Football is big business. Clubs turnover millions if not billions of pounds each year. But they’ve got to play well or they lose their spot in the league – and the cash that goes with it too. So when it doesn’t go to plan, they fire fast.

I think there’s an important lesson we can learn here. How many times have you kept a team member on when you knew they weren’t pulling their weight? How many employees should you have let go sooner? How many times have you made excuses or given them another chance because you just want to be a good boss and a kind person? Too many I’d bet.

Now, at Millennium I’m all about the people. I love my team. They’re the superstars who keep the cogs turning and make sure your goods get where they need to go. And I truly couldn’t do it without them. But that’s because they’re a great team. They’re hard workers. They love what they do. They understand their jobs and they do them well – not only because they are paid to, but because they take pride in their work.

I’d love to say that’s all because I’m an awesome boss and this is an awesome place to work – but the truth is it’s not. It’s because they are good people who care about what they do. If you’ve got a team member who isn’t delivering on their promises, then perhaps you should take a leaf out of the Premier League’s book? After all, you can’t have a great team if you don’t have great people…

So how about you? Got any team superstars? Had to let someone go? I’d love to hear your staff stories…
