Good day all …

september 2022

Do you remember the TV series Extreme Makeover? It was a reality TV show based in the US. Basically, an unhappy man or woman would undergo a makeover… This wasn’t just any old make-up and new clothes makeover. No. This was an extreme makeover.

Their hair would be cut and died, they’d take part in a serious exercise regime and diet and they’d even undergo plastic surgery. At the end of the episode, they’d be revealed to their friends and family, looking 10 years younger – and like a totally different person.

Now, I’m no spring chicken but I don’t think an extreme makeover is for me. (I like my beers and footie too much!).

But I did decide last year that it was time for Millennium to get a facelift. We got a new website, a new logo, fresh colours and branding… A new look. And it’s been a huge success. But one thing stayed the same. Our name.

I recently read a news article about Turkey changing its name to Türkiye. Apparently, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan feels the name changes will help represent and express the culture, civilisation, and values of the Turkish nation in the best way. And they’re not the only country or city to change.

What was once Madras in India, is now Chennai, Bombay became Mumbai and Burma is Myanmar. I could go on… The question is, does a name really matter?

Does it matter if you’re called Turkey or Türkiye? If you’re ABC Plumbing or XYZ Plumbing? Is it good to change your name or should you keep it the same?

We’ve undergone a fair few “extreme makeovers”. In fact, since I started the business in 1996, we’ve rebranded four times – but the name has never changed. For me, Millennium Cargo will always be Millennium Cargo. It’s who we are and I like to think that the reputation we’ve built around that name stands for something.

What do you think? Does a name matter that much or is it better to move with the times and give your name an “extreme makeover” every now and then?
