CODE RED

Nov 2021

This week, leaders from around the world have gathered in Glasgow, here in the UK, for COP6. Biden, Johnson, Trudeau, Macron, Duque, Morrison, Bennet, Prince Charles… the list goes on…

Pretty much all the who’s who of world leaders will be there, with a few exceptions such as China’s President, Jinping, Russia’s Putin and the Queen (due to ill health).

The goal of COP26 is to address the climate crisis and it’s the first of its kind since 2019. And it’s excellent timing.

Just recently, the UN’s IPCC Report labelled global warming as a “code red for humanity” and stated that current human behaviour is changing the climate in unprecedented and sometimes irreversible ways. But don’t panic – yet. Scientists say a catastrophe can be avoided if the world acts fast.

The question is, will we act fast enough? Can we trust our world leaders to make the right decisions and protect our future?

Now, I know climate change is a hot topic. Many feel passionate about it and many feel it’s a big hoax, but whichever side of the fence you sit on, the irony of the world leader’s behaviour this past week won’t have passed you by…

More than 110 private jets were chartered to fly the leaders into the UK, burning more than 1000 tons of CO2. Biden rocked up in a 20 car motorcade… Just a week after his 85 car motorcade transported him to the G20 Summit in Rome. Laughable really, isn’t it? It’s like a live demonstration of how NOT to reduce carbon emissions!

Now, I’ve no idea what the future holds. I don’t know if the earth’s on the point of collapse or if climate change is the next big scam, but I do know that leading by example is important.

And it’s the same in business… You want your staff to turn up on time, presentable and raring to start the day? Do it yourself. You want your team to be proactive, positive and results-focused? Then you need to model that. You want you people to take the climate crisis seriously, don’t rock up in a private jet and a 20 car motorcade…
