Ever wonder what small decisions might make a big impact on your life?

There’s a great, old movie about this, it’s called The Butterfly Effect. It’s about a college student called Evan (Ashton Kutcher) who discovers he can travel back in time using only his mind. As any young man would, he decides to use his power to try and alter his past, avoiding the traumatic events in his childhood and trying to make life better for himself and the people he cares about. But every time he goes back and changes anything, no matter how small, it triggers a chain of events that ultimately totally alter the course of his life. Bit of a mind-twister but well worth a watch and it always gets me thinking. 

Every decision we make in our lives has an impact. Big decisions, small decisions and even the ones in between, and we never really know quite how big that impact will be. Take my life as an example. Many years ago, I flunked my exams and agreed to an apprenticeship in freight forwarding, not because I had any particular interest in the industry, but because the only other option offered to me was banking or insurance and I couldn’t bear to wear a suit every day. That one decision has completely shaped my life. 

This week, Millennium Cargo celebrates our 30th Birthday. That’s no small feat. Over the last three decades, we’ve helped thousands of customers, transported who knows how many tons of cargo and positively impacted the lives of more people than I can count. And I’m really proud of the business we’ve become. We have grown, built a team, created a network of forwarders all over the world that share our vision and focus. Yet we’ve not once let go of our core foundational values – that people matter, and freight should be all about building positive relationships. When I sat in that room with the school careers counsellor, weighing up the two leaflets before me, I had no idea that decision would set me on a trajectory that would shape the rest of my life, and so many other people’s too.
