Sixty years ago, something incredible happened.
Eleven young men worked together to achieve what turned out to be a once in a lifetime dream. For ninety minutes, they gave it their best, running, defending, shooting and scoring against West Germany, to win the World Cup at the home of English football Wembley Stadium. It was a tense match. With Germany equalling the score to 2-2 at the 90-minute mark, it could have been anyone’s match. But the boys did good, scoring two more goals in extra time and bringing home that glorious victory. It’s been 60 years since. And not only have we never won the cup again, we’ve not even had a shot at the final.
But this year, it could be different. In a few days’ time, the 2026 World Cup kicks off, with football teams from all over the world battling it out to try and bring the cup home for their country. It’s a huge event, with over 5 billion people tuning in to watch from all over the world. I’m not going to lie, I am a little excited. But not just about the chance to watch more footie down the pub or in my armchair at home, but because of what it brings to the freight industry too.
As international freight forwarders, we work all over the world. We’ve got partners, customers and suppliers in all four corners of the globe. We love talking to them about freight, but what we love about the World Cup is that it gives us an opportunity to talk about sport too. It brings us closer together, gives us something to banter about and keeps the conversation flowing.
Now obviously, we’re not all rooting for the same team. The Millennium team here will be very much supporting our boys in white, but it gives us something we all share to keep the conversation going and add a little excitement to the working day. So tell me, will you be following the World Cup? Has your country ever brought the cup home? Who do you think will win this year?
I’d love to hear your thoughts.
