Do you remember the story a few years ago about the great Easter Egg Heist of 2023?
Over 200,000 Cadbury’s Creme Eggs were stolen from an industrial estate in Telford, with a street value of around £40,000! The police were called, and a search began for the criminal who was presumably purporting to be the Easter bunny. After a few days, the eggs were recovered when the coppers stopped a vehicle on the M42 motorway, only to find the Easter Bunny imposter and all his stolen goods inside.
Well, it seems there’s more than one chocoholic Easter Bunny bandit. This time, it’s KitKats that have been swiped. 413,793 bars of the crunchy, chocolatey goodness! That’s over 12 tons that just seem to have disappeared after leaving its production site in Italy, in a truck heading for Poland.
But the mystery doesn’t stop there… It’s not just the chocolate bars that are nowhere to be found, the truck (and I’m assuming its driver?) are missing too! It’s a bit of an Easter mystery. KitKat made an announcement before the weekend, stating that the theft, while sizeable, wouldn’t have any impact on the supply of chocolate at Easter, and the chocoholics all over the country breathed a sigh of relief.
On a more serious note though, freight theft can be a problem, not just for chocolate manufacturers but importers and exporters of all kinds. Thieves are getting more sophisticated, and logistics companies and manufacturers are having to keep updating their security protocols to keep up. Just another reason why it’s super important to work with a freight forwarding company or logistics firm you can really trust. One who takes the safety of your cargo seriously, and can advise you on the best routes to take, insurances you might need and the belt and braces security options you can put in place.
Anyway, that’s all from me for now. I’m off to have a break, have a KitKat.
