Ever had someone say something simple that suddenly changes the way you think?

“You’ve got a hobby inside your job.” That’s what one of my blog subscribers said to me the other week – and I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

See, every week I send out these little stories. Nothing flashy. Just me, sharing thoughts from the world of freight (and life). And over time, something surprising has happened. I’ve had people reach out from all over the world, far too many countries to mention. Some just say hi. Others share their own stories. And a few say something that really sticks with me…

This one chap from Dubai has been chatting with me recently. Engaging with my emails, always asking questions, curious about where the ideas come from, how I keep it consistent. Recently, he said something that stopped me in my tracks… “I’ve just realised… you’ve got a hobby inside your job.” At first, I laughed. Freight forwarding? A hobby? I mean, I do love what I do… but I still wouldn’t call it a hobby. But then I thought about it. He’s right.

I’ve been in freight for 35 years. Every day, I’m knee-deep in the joys of running and owning a freight forwarding company, and (if I’m lucky) a decent bacon butty.  But the bit I love? The creative side. The writing. The connection. Telling stories, building trust, and turning something as dry as shipping into something people actually look forward to reading. That’s my “hobby.” And I think that’s why people enjoy these emails. Because we’re not just selling. We’re sharing. We’re building something real.

So let me ask you…do you have a hobby inside your job? Something that lights you up – even on the tough days? I’d love to hear about it.
