“How are you doing?” I asked.
“Fine,” He replied. “Well, fine apart from the cicadas.”
Now, I don’t know about you. But I had no idea what cicadas were. I’d never heard of them.
But my New York buddy explained.
Cicadas are small, locust type bugs that sweep the Eastern states in the USA and only make an appearance once every 17 years!
Yep, you read that right – every 17 years.
For most of their lives, cicadas burrow underground, making tunnels and feeding beneath the soil. Then, when the time is right they pop out of the ground en masse in a spectacular display of nature.
While they’re not dangerous, they are noisy. The purpose of flocking above the ground is to find a mate. And they do this by making an awful racket!
The noise of cicadas is so loud in fact that it’s been recorded at 96 decibels! That’s as loud as a lawnmower or a motorcycle!
Now, you might not be a big fan of bugs, but witnessing a cicada swarm is quite an experience – and one many people will never get!
You see, not only do they only venture above ground once every 17 years, this natural phenomenon only happens in Eastern USA – nowhere else in the world!
For bug enthusiasts, it’s probably a once in a lifetime bucket list experience. Miss it this year and you’ve a whole 17 years to wait!
The thing is, most bug enthusiasts won’t be there. They won’t make plans and take the action necessary to make sure they don’t miss out.
The cicadas will come and go and they’ll be left sitting at home wondering if they’ll ever get that chance again. And some of them won’t…
You see, we don’t know what life has in store for us. If this year’s taught us anything it’s to appreciate right now – because you don’t know what’s lurking around the corner.
So if you’re a bug enthusiast, go see those cicadas. If you want to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, get it booked. If you want to push your business to the next level, take action! Start ticking off that bucket list and doing those things you’ve always wanted to do.
You might only get one chance…
So what’s on your bucket list? I’d love to hear what weird and wonderful goals, wishes and dreams you guys have…
