Cargo Craziness: Even The Somali Pirates Gave Me Soap & Toothpaste…

A couple of months ago, journalist Michael Scott Moore went viral on Twitter.

If you don’t know, Michael was kidnapped and held hostage by Somali pirates for 977 days back in 2012.

His reply to Trump Official, Sarah Fabian’s claim that detained children don’t need soap, toothbrushes, or beds to be ‘safe and sanitary’ while in Border Patrol custody, totally hit the nail on the head.

So what did he tweet?

“Somali pirates gave me soap and toothpaste…”

His tweet got shared more than 175,000 times and got nearly half a million likes. It shows the situation in the detainment camps to be exactly what it is… quite simply inhumane and unacceptable.

But I’m not here to talk about Trump today… I think we’ve had enough politics this month already!

I want to talk about pirates!

Did you know that there were 201 pirate attacks in 2018?

Now, I’m not talking ‘peg-legged, bearded, eye patched pirates’, brandishing swords and getting drunk on rum!

I’m talking terrifying, ruthless and fearless men, armed with machine guns and machetes who are willing to do whatever it takes to get what they want.

There’s nothing fun or endearing about 21st century pirates.

They’ll cut off your hands, decapitate your captain and take your cargo as quick as you can say “Pirates ahead!”

Pirate attacks happen everywhere from the Philippines to Peru, but the waters around Somalia have the worst reputation.

While the number of attacks have halved since 2010, it’s still such a problem that ships sailing this route will often employ specialist security companies to protect them on their journey!

But it’s not only cargo ships that the pirates go after. There are tales of pirate attacks on private yachts, with the passengers been put up for ransom.

So if you’re sailing the Somalian seas any time soon, just be careful…

”There be pirates in those there waters…”
