People seem to think that freight is a boring industry to work in, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.
As you know, I love my crazy shipping stories. From killer snails to noodle sauce disasters, there’s never a dull day in the world of freight!
Earlier this month the US Customs officials carried out a raid on the MSC Gayane, a container ship owned by JP Morgan. The huge vessel has capacity for 10,000 containers and is valued at around $94m. It had set sail from Chile and called in at Peru, Panama and Freemont in the Bahamas, before reaching the USA, with the intention of heading on to Europe.
Now, customs raids themselves are not hugely unusual. In fact, they carried out a similar one on another MSC ship earlier this year.
But what makes this one interesting is what they found.
When they took control of the ship and carried out a thorough search, they discovered drugs.
Ok, no big surprise.
But it was a LOT of drugs.
The MSC Gayane was hiding more than 20 tons of cocaine, spread throughout multiple containers.
That’s around $1.3 billion worth of drugs at street value!
Now, the ship has been impounded in Philadelphia, the drugs seized, and several people arrested including the ship’s Second Officer.
Which is great news for the law-abiding citizens of the USA and Europe.
But just think about this…
Somewhere in the world, there is a very very upset drug lord who just lost $1.3 billion.
So perhaps next time you have a bad day, think about him and your day won’t seem quite so bad.
