There’s no denying it. Christmas is just around the corner. The streets are illuminated with fairy lights, the shops are filled with the sound of Mariah Carey and Michael Buble, and my newsfeed is packed with photos of elves doing unspeakable things.
But where did the rest of the year go? It seems like only last month we were whinging about the long, hot summer and worrying about droughts. It’s like I blinked and the year was gone!
Now, if I spend a little time thinking about it, a lot has happened in that time. The world cup kept us on the edge of our seats, Brits flocked to the seaside to make the most of the freak summer, Teresa May started Brexit “negotiations” and the world stood by and watched in horror as some of the worst wildfires claimed lives in Greece and California.
So why this strange time warp? Why does it feel like each year goes faster and faster and what can we do about it?
Well, short of building a time machine or learning to break the laws of physics, there’s not much that can be done to slow time down. But what we can do is make sure we’re making the most of the time we have got.
There are three keys actions to take if you want to make the most of your time in 2019.
1: Plan, Plan, Plan…
Poorly planned time will slip away from you faster than an eel on a waterslide. What are your goals for 2019? What will you achieve in Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4? What do you need to do to make this happen? If you don’t plan then you’ll fail to get the results you want and before you know it you’ll be sitting wearing your Christmas jumper again, drinking an eggnog and wondering where 2019 has gone…
2: Reflect & Appreciate Your Progress
Looking backwards can help you to appreciate how far you have come and just how much has changed in the previous months. Schedule a time each month to look back over the last quarter and assess what has happened. Celebrate your progress and correct anything that has gone off course. Reflection is one of the biggest keys to success.
3: Watch Our For Time Vampires
Your time is precious. You only have the time that you have and if you waste it, you’ll likely regret it.
Time vampires are EVERYWHERE. Anything that sucks time from your day and holds you back from achieving your goals is a time vampire. That reality TV show you’re hooked on? Time vampire. Your mother in law who insists on having a 20-minute conversation about how you didn’t water the plants correctly? Time vampire. Your client who insists on a face to face meeting to discuss something that could have been ironed out in a 10-minute phone call? Time vampire.
Be vigilant and watch out for the things that you’re spending your time on that are not getting you closer to your goals. Then put a system in place to stop them.
Now, before you think I’ve lost my mind and joined the “Hustle” mentality, let me clarify. When I say goals, I mean all goals, business and personal. If your goal is to be a great father, then spending an hour watching Minecraft videos on Youtube with your son is not a waste of time. If you want to be a good husband, spending a night on the sofa watching Strictly with the wife is probably time well spent.
You don’t have to just work, work, work to make sure you’re making the most of your time. But just be sure that everything you do adds value, to your life or those important people around you.
So What Are Your Goals For 2019?
If you’re not clear on your 2019 goals yet then you best get a move on. You need crystal clear clarity if you want to hit the ground running. For me, the next year is all about moving the business forward, making some new friends around the world and making the most of the last few years I have with the kids before they fly the nest.
So what are your plans for 2019? I’d love to hear about them…
